I went to Toronto this past weekend with tickets to see the musical, Wicked. But, since I'm in love with theatre, I (not-so-surprisingly) saw 2 other shows as well. On Friday evening I saw the musical, Songs for a New World. The show was fairly good, but not stellar (it's not your typical muscial; the music is incredible though. I'd recommend skipping the show and buying the CD instead).
Saturday night I saw the play, Insomnia starring Daniel Brooks (who is pretty big in the Canadian theatre world; he also wrote the play). The show was directed by Chris Abraham who also directed Songs for a New World, but his direction in Insomnia was WAY better. The show is absolutely amazing; the space is used so creatively and the lighting is magnificent (and so is the acting). I highly recommend this show. See Insomnia if you're in Toronto in the next few weeks, before it closes.
Finally, after having tickets for MONTHS, I got to see Wicked!!! This was definitely the highlight of my Toronto trip! The show is just great! The leads alone are well worth the money I paid to see the show. I was already in love with the music, and was so happy to find out that there is extra music in the show that isn't on the soundtrack. Set, lighting, music, singing, sound, acting... it was all just awesome. The story is relly good too; I've read the book and I was pleased with how they took parts of it and arranged it into the musical it is. Just great. Wicked is worth every penny. If I had the money, I'd see it again.
